Detroit Internet Exchange teams up with Arista to expand high-speed capacity

Detroit Internet Exchange (DET-IX), a non-profit internet exchange point in Southfield Michigan, is partnering with Arista Networks to improve its capacity in an attempt to attract new clients.

Hosted via 123Net, a Michigan-based telephone, Internet, and colocation provide, Arista, a software-driven cloud networking solutions provider, will provide DET-IX with a new DCS-7504 N switch increasing capacity at the exchange to a total of 15Tbps and 7.2 billion packets per second.

The Arista platform gives its members access to next-gen equipment, including its data centre switches that feature its Extensible Operating System (EOS), which delivers industry leading network stability. In addition, the Arista platform offers fully redundant N+1 line cards, supervisors and power supplies.

Membership and ports at DET-IX are free. The ecosystem of carriers, ISP’s, content providers, and enterprise businesses at DET-IX allows for traffic to be exchanged freely, rather than paying to make the connection. 123Net hopes that with the additional hardware it will attract global content providers, carriers, and regional ISPs to meet and exchange traffic locally in Detroit.

Last year, 123Net partnered with another non-profit organisation to expand its fibre footprint along the QLine, formerly M-1 Rail in Detroit

The 3.3 mile stretch of 144 count fibre runs from Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit to the Fisher Building, alongside the full length of the newly opened QLine and marks one of many investments the company has made into Detroit’s infrastructure.

The newly built high-capacity fibre line will improve business connectivity and allow customers to transfer large files in seconds, using what the company has described as ‘nearly unlimited bandwidth’ that is easily scalable and benefits from ‘nearly constant uptime’.

At the time, Chuck Irvin, director of network development at 123Net, said: "Connecting buildings directly to fiber will provide the fastest and most reliable internet connection on the market. We are excited about the opportunity to provide growing organizations in Detroit with this service. This project makes Detroit more inviting for global enterprises looking to invest in the city."
