Former Allied Fiber unit Strome Networks resurges under new ownership

Resurgence Infrastructure Holdings has acquired a former Allied Fiber network in the south-eastern US.

The investor has bought Strome Networks, which two years ago acquired AF-Southeast, an operating subsidiary of Allied Fiber.

The expanded group, now called ResurgenceIG, is now the owner and operator of a contiguous dark fibre network in Florida with reach into Atlanta, Georgia.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to acquire and build upon the network and colocation assets of Strome Networks,” said Scott Drake, CEO of ResurgenceIG.

“This geographically strategic network is constructed along secure private rights-of-way, interconnected to key data centres in both Florida and Georgia, and includes eleven Type-II data and colocation facilities.”

In August 2016 Drake was CEO of Strome Networks, when it acquired all of the network and colocation assets of AF-Southeast. Allied Fiber had earlier put its south-eastern subsidiaries into bankruptcy protection. When Strome bought the operation a planned auction was cancelled, as Strome was the only qualified bidder.

Details released then said that Strome, owned by entrepreneur Mark Strome’s investment fund, had a dark fibre network in Florida from Miami to Jacksonville, with over 110,000 optical miles of available capacity, as well as further 63,000 optical miles of available capacity that continues from Jacksonville to Atlanta.

In yesterday’s announcement ResurgenceIG said it now owns and operates a contiguous dark fibre network in Florida, including 120,000 optical fibre miles of available capacity extending from Miami to Jacksonville, and a dark fibre network that continues into Atlanta with approximately 82,000 optical fibre miles of available capacity. No price was quoted for the acquisition.

“Our operating model is based upon improved operating costs along with a fundamental change in direction. We are expanding our product offerings,” said Nick Lenoci, president and COO of ResurgenceIG.

“A key growth strategy for us in the near-future, is to offer spectrum leases, also known as alien waves, in addition to our existing dark fiber IRUs and leases. We are also exploring a fundamental structural change of our network from a linear architecture to a ring architecture.”

Drake said that he and Lenoci – who was COO at Strome Networks from 2016 until now – are “two long-term veterans of telecom, technology and infrastructure”.

He said: “Since August 2016, we have managed this network, protected our customers’ interests in IRUs and colocation leases, and diligently attacked the operating model of the company to ensure a strong foundation for our future and for our customers. And we can now develop network solutions beyond the existing borders of our south-eastern fibre network.”

ResurgenceIG said it “has a clear vision for its future; the growth capital to execute its business plans and a well-qualified core management team to support its customers”.
