Digital Realty has opened a new facility in Australia and bought land for another new, neighbouring site, bringing its total investment in the country to A$1 billion.

The new facility, which is located in Erskine Park in Sydney, is its second facility on the site, which is known as Digital Erskine Park II. It adds 7000sqm of space and an increased IT capacity of up to 17.4MW.

The grand opening of the second facility was attended by Councillor Greg Davies, the deputy mayor of Penrith, and Graham Davis-King, member and director of the Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council. The new facility will be connected through dark fibre to Digital Realty’s existing facility on the site.

Digital Realty CEO A. William Stein stated, "Sydney's status as a global hotspot for innovation, and a key city for multinationals as they touch down into the Asia Pacific region, makes it a critically important destination for us.  This facility will serve the community well as a strong addition to Sydney's data and technology infrastructure, which is increasingly under-resourced due to the rapid growth of inbound business and the regional digital economy."

Structure Research's recent Australian data centre research report suggests that massive-scale cloud providers are driving demand in the Sydney and Melbourne data centre markets.

With the new site now open, Digital Realty is already focussed on opening its sixth Australian facility with the acquisition of additional land to build a third site in Erskine Park. Design and planning work for the new 12-megawatt facility is expected to begin shortly, with incremental capacity scheduled to be delivered by 2020, it said.

This will be the company’s fourth facility in New South Wales, with the other one in Macquarie Park, and its sixth in the country – the other two are located in the state of Victoria.

Overall, Digital Realty owns and operates 198 facilities across 32 metropolitan areas across the globe, with 12 in the Asia Pacific region – the others are located in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Osaka.

"We are excited to further expand our presence in Sydney, a key market for us in Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region," said Krupal Raval, CFO for Asia Pacific at Digital Realty.  "The time is right for this expansion.

“Given the fantastic market demand we have seen for our newest facility that just opened, we have already started the design and planning process for the next phase of our Erskine Park connected campus.  We expect to break ground soon, with the goal of delivering our next data centre for customers requiring critical IT space in Sydney by 2020."
