ITW 2024: 'Collaboration key to Africa's digital future', warns government leader

At the opening of ITW 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, PhD, cabinet secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, outlined the country’s bold digital transformation strategy.

She emphasised Kenya’s commitment to enhancing connectivity across urban and remote regions, while strengthening its role as a digital hub for East Africa, South Sudan, Somalia, and beyond.

Dr. Ndung’u also announced the expansion of international connectivity via terrestrial and subsidised fibre networks, enhancing data exchange across Africa.

A key initiative is the development of a green data centre in the country through a public-private partnership, which aims to meet rising demand for data storage while minimising carbon emissions by using renewable energy and advanced cooling technologies.

She also highlighted Kenya’s growing digital platforms, such as the eCitizen service, which provides access to government services at both the national and county levels. These platforms are transforming sectors including healthcare, education, and agriculture, improving access to services for underserved communities.

Kenya’s strategy includes building a skilled workforce through initiatives such as the Presidential Digital Talent Programme and the creation of digital hubs across the country, providing training and resources to support digital inclusion.

“By enhancing our regional partnerships and collaborating with our neighbors, we aim to build more interconnected and integrated African digital economy.”

“As a government, we remain committed to ensuring that all share the benefits of this transformation as we work together to create a digitally empowered, inclusive and sustainable future for the continent, all this in a safe and secure way," she said.

Dr. Ndung’u reaffirmed Kenya’s status as Africa’s Silicon Valley, citing the success of M-Pesa as an example of the country’s pioneering role in mobile banking and financial inclusion.

She concluded by highlighting Kenya’s commitment to fostering a vibrant digital marketplace, supporting innovation, and ensuring digital inclusivity for all, as the country moves towards a sustainable and secure digital future.
